  • In-home training and living to promote excellent behavior in and your house and in the field
  • Basic obedience including on- and off-lead conditioning (sit, stay, here, heel, fetch)

At the end of this program your retriever will be eager to please, well-behaved and prepared for more advanced training.

Basic Field Training Program

Obedience training is the foundation of all retrieving work and ensures that your dog is  well-behaved, well-mannered and safe. Obedience training includes the basic commands of sit, stay, here, and heel as well as on and off lead conditioning. A solid obedience foundation is combined with introductory field training.

Basic field training includes:

  • Basic obedience including on- and off-lead conditioning (sit, stay, here, heel, fetch)
  • Collar Conditioning
  • Sit and Here to whistle
  • Stick Fetch
  • Force Fetch
  • Force to a Pile
  • Stop to a Pile
  • Three Handed Casting
  • Double-T
  • Swim By
  • Basic marking

To maintain a positive attitude, your dog will receive marks daily and flyers weekly. To teach various retrieving/marking patterns, we begin with single retrieves, with multiple guns in the field, and build to double and triple retrieves, while steadily increasing the difficulty of the retrieving set-up.

Transition Program

The transition program helps solidify skills learned “in the yard” as part of basic field training and transfers these skills to more advanced field work. At this stage, many of our dogs are preparing to run competitive retrieving events involving multiple marks and blind retrieves. However, the transition program is also crucial for your hunting companion. Your dog is taught:

  • Basic handling via pattern blinds
  • Pattern blinds with diversions
  • Cold blinds
  • “Cheating” singles
  • Marks off multiple guns

As in the basic training program, the transition program includes daily retrieving set-ups and weekly flyers to maintain a positive attitude, improve marking and increase desire to retrieve.

Advanced Program

The advanced program prepares your do to run competitive events with multiple marks and blinds, whether it be in hunt tests or field trials. Skills taught include:

  • Casting Mechanics/Perfected Handling
  • Literal Casting
  • Carrying a Straight Line
  • Fighting Factors
  • Land and Water Triples
  • Retired Guns
  • Advanced Marking Concepts

At this stage, and all stages, we will work with you to assure that your expectations and goals are being addressed. You are always welcome to observe your dog in training and if you desire, we will help you learn how to best compete or hunt with your dog.

Group & Private Lessons

For group lessons, a marking set-up is provided along with blind retrieves. Retrieves are taught in sequence, starting with singles and advancing to various multiples, taking into consideration the level of each individual dog. Blind retrieves are reserved for those dogs that are in, or have completed Transition Training. Private lessons are tailored to the needs of the dog and handler.
